Simple Drill To Improve Punch Speed
Updated: May 16, 2023
This almost looks so simple that you may overlook it, but believe me, this type of basics drill using a simple jab and rear straight punch combination (1-2) will make a huge difference to your punch speed.
Don't forget this importance of drilling the basics when it comes to boxing fitness. While we all like to be able to throw out complex combinations, it is the perfecting of the basics that helps us develop more advanced techniques.
When you break your punches down to the basics you also have a chance to practice and develop all of the attributes to performing good punches. Here you can begin to ensure that your footwork is on point, practice the timing of your punches inline with your feet, distributing your weight into your punches without over throwing and making sure that you are balanced continually, so that when you fire your shots you are not falling into the punch bag.
This video demonstrates the “sniper” fast fire punches on a large aqua punch bag, but this workout drill can be performed on any punch bag.
Here are some tips when using different punch bags for this technique.
Light Freestanding Punchbag:

Light Free Standing Punch Bags are really good for speed. Make sure you go for fast strike connection not heavy punches.
Heavy Freestanding Punchbag:

Heavy Free Standing Punchbag will enable you to mix the speed with the power. Just make sure that if you are hitting hard, that’s the hands come back quickly and you do not throw your body into the punch bag.
Light Hanging Punch Bag:

Light Hanging Punchbags are really good for speed and technique striking. You can still apply power, but with this technique you may need to anchor the bag to the floor. Move with the punch bag as it sways as this will help you develop your footwork. Make sure you go for fast strike connection not heavy punches.
Heavy Hanging Punch Bag:

Heavy Hanging Punch Bag: Here you can mix the speed with the power. It’s the strike impact you are pushing for here so just make sure that if you are hitting hard, that’s the hands come back quickly and you do not throw your body into the punch bag. You need to be able to throw your next punches quickly.
Heavy Aqua Punch Bag:

Using the Heavy Aqua Punch Bag, make sure that you stay long with the arms and stay behind your punches. The way aqua bag provides great feedback into the hands as you punch, but it’s quite easy to start winging your body into the punch bag and this it’s not going to produce fast punches. Stay behind the punches, fire using your footwork, keep yourself on the move with the guard up in between the punches.
Small Aqua Punch Bag:

Using the Small Aqua Punch Bag is an excellent opportunity to mix you speed and hand eye coordination, as the lighter aqua punch bags can tend to move a lot. Keep yourself moving in between punches combinations, keep your eyes on the aqua punch bag, and develop your reaction speeds.
Wall Punch Bag:

Wall bags are very effective for many drills and with this drill you have a great opportunity to really place some power into the shots, but don’t forget that this workout drill is all about sniper quick fire shots. Wall Punch Bags are great for power, but equally great for speed and combination punches.
