How To Set Up A Home Boxing Gym Part 1
Updated: Oct 8, 2022
With boxing oriented workouts you have a workout system that is up there with one of the best ways of getting fit as well as providing you with an activity that is fun to learn, keeps your mind occupied and doesn’t give you time to get bored.
Rather than sitting on a bike, or stomping away on a treadmill (nothing against these, but if that is all you got, that’s boring) or trying to get your head around home circuits, boxing fitness would help pad out your training schedules so that as well as working out, you get to learn and improve with something new. New motor skills, punch techniques, improved agility, reflexes, speed, the list could go on.
So with this being the case, it makes sense to question, why are you not adding this to your weekly workout routine?
For most people this comes down to a lack of knowing where to start and also how you can get a good and consistent workout plan from such an idea, so my first recommendation would be to start with the set up.

Setting Up A Boxing Workout Space At Home with absolutely no equipment.
So let's start with what equipment you need. Well, if you wanted to start today, you can literally start with no equipment at all. All that you will need is just a tiny bit of space so that you can shadow spar.
Shadow Sparring is a very underrated workout, but with the gains you get from setting up a shadow sparring workout, it makes perfect sense to give it a go and make a start.
Top 5 Tips for your Home Shadow Spar Boxing Gym
Designate a space for you to use.
If you have a small area you can work in, try and Pre-set up the area so that it is either completely clear, or that you don’t have too much to move to get it set up.
It’s good to have enough room to be able to move at least from side to side and forward and backwards, as well as

allowing space for exercises such as push ups, burpee's, crunches etc. It doesn't have to be massive, just space enough that is dedicated to your workout time.
Mirrors make a difference.
Having a mirror to be able to use for training is in my opinion very important. It gives you the opportunity to view your training techniques and be instantly critical and correct if what you are seeing is not what you are trying to do.

Being able to make corrections in this way helps you develop good technique that will form a good muscle-memory foundation. Your mirror doesn't have to be flash, just enough for you to check out your basic movements.
Wall Planner & Workout Records
These are great for tracking your progress and keeping you mindful of your training adjectives. I love to note my

workouts down. Simple things like, ‘Tues, 04.01.21 Run 5KM- 5 Rounds Punch Bag - 4 Rounds Shadow Spar; Felt really good, but I need to improve my footwork and rear hook.’ Having this information reminds me of the accomplishment that day and also gives me the follow on of what I need to work on next time. It provides a greater progressive purpose to my next training session, rather than it being just a workout, I've got a formal intention to improve.
Schedule Your Workout
When you are working in a home gym, it can be very easy to put it off until later, because you feel as though it will be

easy to just go into the next room and train. Don’t fall into this trap, instead make a time, set the time and stick to the appointment you have set for yourself.
Set Yourself a Consistency Goals.
While you now have the facility to workout easily, and you may start out that first week with lots of goals and intentions, it can be very easy to slip out of this new routine. With my clients I get them to set consistency goals before any other, because without consistency, you are never going to fulfil the other goals.

A consistency goal could look like this;
‘I am aiming to workout 4 times per week for a minimum of 20 minutes for the next 4 weeks.’
Set those sessions on your wall planner. That would be 16 sessions to complete. Every time you complete a workout, tick off the session as complete. It sounds simple, and it is, but having the visual of you chipping away at this simple goal keeps you focused on where you need to be and helps you see the accomplishment of this goal getting ever closer.
Summary
You don't need to have equipment to start, just a few simple implementations and a formal intention to start. From here you can be getting yourself moving and fitter in no time at all.
